9 Tenets of New Computing

While principles define methods, tenets define outcomes.

  1. Local-first, offline-first. Know your neighbours, collaborate with friends, learn together, connect locally.

  2. Safe like home. Maintain your dignity, only reveal what’s appropriate. The rest is safe and never leaves your computer.

  3. Transparent. Curiosity is the reward. Look behind the scenes, inside the box. Learn from the source.

  4. Friendly and approachable. Your computer is your friend. It’s there to give you a hand when you need it. Always approachable, and always helpful.

  5. A toy and a tool. Play leads to mastery; exploration leads to discovery. Work and play go together.

  6. Holistic. Your ideas are a living web. Context flows across apps, everything communicates, everything has a place.

  7. Adapted to human rhythms. Slow when you’re slow, quick when you’re quick. Adapted to life on Earth. Never intrusive, always gentle.

  8. Physical. Real materials, tactile controls, media you can hold. Built for humans.

  9. Invisible and responsive. The machine fades into the background. It’s just you and the medium.
